We take into account the program you choose — whether you’re going on a language trip, a High School Year, or enrolling in a study program. In Canada, costs vary significantly by region. Your monthly budget therefore depends on the number of weeks, the province or city where you stay (such as Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, or Calgary), and what is included in your accommodation.

How does our calculation work?
AtSkool uses a transparent, accurate, and experience-based method to determine your monthly costs in Canada as realistically as possible.
- First, we look at the program you are following. A High School Year often includes many fixed components such as accommodation and meals, which lowers your personal expenses. With language trips and study programs, this varies per package — the more that is included, the less you will need to spend each month.
- Next, we analyze your destination within Canada. Vancouver and Toronto are among the more expensive cities due to high rent and living costs. Montreal is often slightly more affordable, while cities such as Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, or Halifax generally offer more budget-friendly price levels.
- We then consider the duration of your stay. A short stay has different spending patterns compared to a full academic year. The longer you stay, the more accurately we can estimate your average monthly budget.
- Your type of accommodation also plays an important role: host family, student residence, on-campus housing, or shared apartment. Host families usually include multiple meals per day, while independent housing options often result in higher daily grocery and living expenses.
- In addition, we include up-to-date local prices for groceries (Canada can be slightly more expensive due to imports), public transportation (metro passes, buses, or subway), sports, dining out, clothing (including winter clothing!), school materials, and personal expenses.
- Finally, we base our budget estimates on the real experiences of previous AtSkool students in Canada. Their actual monthly expenses provide a reliable foundation for a realistic cost estimate per city and per type of program.
