We take into account the program you choose — whether you’re going on a language trip, a High School Year, or enrolling in a study program. In Germany, costs are generally around the European average, but they vary by region. Your monthly budget therefore depends on the number of weeks, the city where you stay (such as Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, or Cologne), and what is included in your accommodation.

How does our calculation work?
AtSkool uses a transparent, reliable, and experience-based method to calculate your monthly costs in Germany as accurately as possible.
- First, we look at the program you are following. A High School Year often includes fixed components such as accommodation and meals. With language trips and study programs, these inclusions vary per package — the more that is included, the lower your personal expenses will be.
- Next, we analyze your destination within Germany. Munich is known as one of the most expensive cities, especially in terms of rent and transportation. Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne, and Düsseldorf each have different price levels, depending on the neighborhood and lifestyle. Smaller cities are usually significantly more affordable.
- We then take the duration of your stay into account. A short stay has different spending patterns compared to a full academic year. The longer you stay, the more accurately we can estimate your monthly costs.
- Your type of accommodation also plays a major role: host family, student residence, campus housing, or shared apartment. Some accommodations include (almost) all meals, while others provide only breakfast or no meals at all — which directly affects your personal expenses.
- In addition, we include up-to-date local prices for groceries, public transportation (Germany has an extensive and reliable transport network), sports, dining out, school materials, weekend activities, and personal expenses.
- Finally, we base our budget estimates on the experiences of previous AtSkool students in Germany. Their actual monthly expenses provide an honest picture of what students truly spend per city and per program.
