We take into account the program you choose — whether you’re going on a language trip, a High School Year, or enrolling in a study program. In Hong Kong, costs can vary significantly by neighborhood. Your monthly budget therefore depends on the number of weeks, the area where you stay (such as Kowloon, Hong Kong Island, or the New Territories), and what is included in your accommodation.

How does our calculation work?

AtSkool uses a transparent, careful, and experience-based method to determine your monthly costs in Hong Kong as realistically as possible.

 

  • First, we look at the type of program you are following. High School programs often include accommodation and meals, while language trips and study programs offer different package options. The more that is included, the lower your personal monthly expenses will be.
  • Next, we analyze your exact destination within Hong Kong. Areas such as Central, Wan Chai, and Tsim Sha Tsui have a higher price level, while districts such as Sha Tin, Tai Po, or parts of Kowloon are often more affordable.
  • We then consider the duration of your stay. Short programs (e.g., 2–4 weeks) have different spending patterns compared to a semester or full academic year. The longer you stay, the more accurately we can estimate your monthly budget.
  • Your type of accommodation plays a major role: host family, student residence, campus housing, or serviced apartment. Some accommodations include full or partial meal plans, while others require more independence — which directly affects your daily expenses.
  • In addition, we include up-to-date local costs for groceries, public transportation (Hong Kong has excellent but heavily used public transport), sports, leisure activities, personal care products, and activities such as museums, cafés, and entertainment. Hong Kong offers both budget-friendly options and luxury choices — your lifestyle ultimately determines your overall monthly spending.
  • Finally, we base our cost estimates on the experiences of previous AtSkool students in Hong Kong. Their actual monthly expenses provide a reliable foundation for a realistic budget per neighborhood and per program.
